Blue Song by Mint Royal Directed by Edgar Wright

The video for Blue Song by Mint Royal directed by Edgar Wright can clearly be compared with the short film The Fly and later Edgar Wright's film Baby Driver. The video begins with a group of four men in a car who are going to perform some sort of crime. The getaway driver, played by Noel Fielding, uses the music to time the heist and in a way to make him look less suspicious. He lip syncs along to the lyrics so it looks like he is the one singing the song. In terms of the narrative Noel Fielding's character sits in the car waiting for the others to finish the crime, and tries to look as inconspicuous as he can. When the song ends the men come back and they drive away. Certain devices are used so that actions in the film are rhythmically in time with the music being played, for example the windscreen wipers and the men shutting their car doors. The Fly

The 2014 short film The Fly, directed by Olly Williams, is about a getaway driver who gets progressively more irritated by a fly that is buzzing around his car. The sound of this fly buzzing plays a large part in the sense of irritation and helps us as a viewer to understand the man's emotions, as well as increasing the tension. The film has the tone of a typical dark comedy, which is added to by the realistic looking mise-en-scene setting of a normal looking street. A close up of the fly makes it feel more realistic as well, since we have seen it so it feels like it isn't just a buzzing sound effect. The series of jump cuts in the editing creates disillusion and chaos. There is clear character development from the performance and the narrative structure, showing how the character becomes progressively more aggressive and impulsive. The Fly Short Film

Why short films are a good thing for new filmmakers

I think that short films are a good thing for new filmmakers because if done well they can be very impactful and interesting without much of a budget or crew. Pretty much anyone with a creative spark would be able to create one in the technological world we live in today, and they can still thought of in a critical manner. It also opens people up to different styles of filmmaking, and ideas about how to create a narrative in a very short amount of time, which could be a useful skill to have in ones future filmmaking endeavours.

The Short Film

Although I haven't watched too many short films before, I am eager to learn more about this style of film and broaden my knowledge of film in general. Currently, my idea of a short film is a film that is not long enough to be a feature film that usually abides to the beginning, middle and end structure.Interesting article on writing a short film

Introduction

Hello, this is my film studies coursework blog.
For my coursework I have to either write a screenplay or create a short film, but I am leaning towards actually creating a short film because as much as I enjoy writing, I also really enjoy the practical side of filmmaking and I think the experience will give me skills, knowledge and insight that will be extremely beneficial to me if I go on to work in the film industry, which I hope to do.
In this blog I hope to document the progress of my coursework throughout the creative process.
